It was ‘first day of business’ yesterday for the first six experienced engineers from the oil and gas industry undertaking their well-control training with Fendley at UQ under a new collaboration.
The UQ Centre for Coal Seam Gas (CCSG) has entered into an agreement with the internationally accredited training provider Fendley Skills Development, who are now offering their internationally certified (IADC & IWCF) well-control courses at UQ’s Long Pocket campus in Indooroopilly. These are certifications that all personnel, including engineers, within the oil and gas industry – and for drilling and well servicing operations – are expected to hold, as per industry practice.
Fendley Skills Development is using state-of-the-art equipment to provide realistic simulated well-control response exercises in the safety of the classroom, ensuring the highest standards of training for Australian oil and gas operations. The simulation facilities are an enhancement to current UQ facilities, and they will also allow opportunities for future research, for example in simulation programming and in risk or behavioural studies.
New and current students enrolled in the Master of Petroleum Engineering at UQ will also benefit from the collaboration as up to 25 students may undertake these internationally recognised and certified well control courses (i.e. well control levels two to four – both IWCF and IADC) as part of their degree and at no extra cost.
UQ is thus one of the first universities in Australia to offer students such a full range of high-level and complete well control training, accredited worldwide, for drilling in the oil and gas industry.
UQ alumni will benefit from this new industry collaboration too as the same courses are offered to alumni at a discount.
