The UQ Centre for Natural Gas plays a key role in meeting the educational needs of the Australian CSG/LNG industry. In 2014, it established a petroleum engineering program – aimed mainly at professionals already in the industry seeking to upgrade their skills or change direction.

A new suite of petroleum engineering programs in 2020

The petroleum engineering program has recently been revamped and will now be part of UQ's Master of Engineering, with five programs ranging from 0.5 to 3 years for full-time studies (part-time studies also available).

Graduates have had a high success rate at finding employment soon after finishing their degree. Some of the companies which have snapped up graduates include Origin Energy, Santos and Woodside.

The Centre has specialised lecturers and professors, both academic and from industry, engaging with Masters and PhD students as part of its educational initiative.

All courses are designed to provide you with knowledge from an international perspective, and guest lectures by industry experts also provide valuable networking opportunities.

The petroleum programs all have strong links with industry, and as a graduate you will benefit greatly from this. Undertaking your professional project, you may also work closely with industry.

Intensive teaching blocks

Courses are taught in intensive mode such that the lectures are delivered in one to three-week blocks, with self-directed learning and tutorials to follow. This flexibility allows for students to work while studying. Note that international students can only study full-time due to visa rules.

International cohorts

The petroleum engineering programs are characterised by attracting students from all over the world. Graduates have come from countries as diverse as Oman, Chile, Indonesia, Kenya, Philippines, Iran, Peru, Russia, China, Brazil and Australia.

This mix of students ensures a rich exchange of ideas, knowledge and methodologies and benefits students in their learning.

Find the program suitable for you

  • Master of Engineering (Petroleum Engineering) [2-years full-time - 32 units] (our flagship program). If you have the equivalent of a 3-year Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) background, this program is for you. It covers the technical disciplines associated with the development of conventional and unconventional oil and gas resources.
  • Master of Engineering (Petroleum Engineering) [3-years full-time - 48 units]. Suitable if you have a non-engineering background. Covers the technical disciplines associated with the development of conventional and unconventional oil and gas resources.
  • Master of Engineering Science (Petroleum Engineering) [1-years full-time - 16 units] aimed at students with a 4-year Petroleum Engineering background (Bachelor of Engineering). Improving  business expertise as well as problem solving and interpersonal skills, this program also provides technical engineering experience. Graduates will be able to cross disciplinary boundaries, equipped to take on advanced engineering work.
  • Master of Engineering Science Management (Petroleum Engineering) [2-years full-time - 32 units] focussed on the development of business skills in engineering graduates without prior formal background and caters for students with relatively advanced backgrounds. In this way, students substitute engineering courses with advanced business management courses. Covers the technical disciplines associated with the development of conventional and unconventional oil and gas resources.
  • Graduate Certificate of Engineering Science (Petroleum Engineering) [6-month full-time - 8 units] aimed at graduates and professionals in the field of petroleum engineering to enhance and upgrade their skills.
