Changes in stakeholder trust in CSG over time
This research resulted in the development of the Stakeholder Trust in Queensland Coal Seam Gas Survey. This survey is being used to monitor and track stakeholder trust in the industry and examine industry progress in enhancing stakeholder trust and improving the industry over time. More broadly, this project advanced research understanding of how stakeholders form judgements of trust, and the factors that influence these judgements.
This project aimed to develop a context-sensitive understanding of the key drivers of stakeholders' trust in the coal seam gas (CSG) companies and broader CSG industry operating in the Western Downs and Surat Basin. It provided a rigorous, independent and empirical understanding of the nature, level and key drivers of trust from the perspective of key stakeholder groups, including Landholders, Community members, Regional leaders, CSG regulatory bodies and CSG employees and contractors (fromOrigin/APLNG, Santos/GLNG, Arrow Energy and QGC).
The project was divided into two phases. Phase 1 involved indepth interviews with 145 CSG stakeholders representing each of the key stakeholder groups. Interview data was coded and analysed, results were reported back to interview participants, and subsequent presentations and reports were given to industry, regulatory, regional and research groups. Phase 2 involved the development and piloting of a CSG Stakeholder Trust survey, survey data collection from each of the key stakeholder groups, data analysis, and reporting of results to industry, regulatory, regional and research groups, as well as through a publicly available publication of the findings, and academic presentations and working papers.
The project identified priority areas for intervention and practical strategies and recommendations for enhancing the trustworthy conduct of the CSG companies and the industry more broadly. The project findings and presentations have informed the policies and practices of CSG companies and regulatory bodies, including the review and revision of stakeholder and contractor management practices, communication channels and responsiveness to landowner and community concerns. It also prompted increased public information sharing and education about the industry.
