Dr Phil Hayes joined The University of Queensland Centre for Natural Gas on 4 February 2019 an as Associate Professor to lead the Centre’s water research program. Phil has been appointed as the Centre’s Chair of Water Resources and Gas Development, taking over from Professor Jim Underschultz, the outgoing Chair in Petroleum Hydrodynamics. 

Researcher biography

Dr Phil Hayes is a Hydrogeologist and specialist in groundwater modelling with 22 years international consulting experience. He has assisted The University of Queensland Centre for Natural Gas on the UQ Surat Deep Aquifer Appraisal Project (UQ-SDAAP) investigating the potential for CO2 sequestration into the Precipice aquifer of the Surat Basin. Phil has been a hydrogeological consultant to the Queensland coal seam gas industry since 2011, working closely with developers and regulators. Phil has a degree in Physics, a PhD in Civil Engineering and has worked as a consultant to clients in mining, oil and gas, nuclear and water resources management globally whilst based in Australia, the UK and Chile. Phil is also Director of Hayes GeoScience, and has been Principal Consultant and technical lead for the Queensland groundwater team at the engineering consultancy Jacobs.
