UQ Winter Internship opportunity: Spatial distributions of methane in groundwater of the Qld Surat Basin

Project title:

Spatial distributions of methane in groundwater of the Qld Surat Basin

Project duration:

3-4 weeks

Description:

Background: Gas (methane) is naturally present at varying concentrations in groundwater pumped by landholders from bores in Queensland’s Surat Basin.

Aim: To develop and test a methodology to map gas content and likelihood of encountering gas.

Approach: Apply Geographic Information Systems (ArcMAP) to analyse and combine publically available datasets to create maps and likelihoods of encountering gas.

Expected outcomes and deliverables:

  • Development and testing of likelihood rankings.
  • Application of method in GIS to produce maps.
  • Presentation of output in a research seminar, and potentially to external stakeholders.
Skills that will be gained:
  • GIS
  • Data collation
  • Database integration
  • Map production
  • Improved hydrogeological understanding of one of the Basins of the Great Artesian Basin.

This placement is suitable for:

  • Students in 3rd / 4th year geology, environmental science or civil engineering.
  • Open to UQ enrolled students only.
  • Previous GIS experience an advantage.
